terrible twos

April 30, 2008 · 3 Comments

Going into Joseph’s room on Sunday night and finding him naked and asleep in his crib was cute.  Today it has turned into a major pain.  When I put him down for his nap this afternoon he was playing so quietly I left him in there a little longer than I might otherwise when he isn’t sleeping.  When I finally went into his room to rescue him from the failed nap attempt I discovered that he had taken his pants and diaper off, and he had peed in his crib.  Fortunately none of his blankets or stuffed animals had been hit, but it wasn’t pretty.

I tried to reprimand him but he didn’t seem to realize he had done anything wrong.  We have been talking about introducing a “time out” and I decided that this was a good opportunity.  I made him stand in the corner of his room while I slowly changed the sheets on his crib, put his clothes in the laundry bin, and made his bed.  I dragged this out a little for punishment, but he just stood there looking cute and didn’t seem to mind the time out zone.

The missed naps are still a thorn in my side.  Yesterday he had a long late nap, and he was up until 11pm babbling in his crib.  Today he didn’t nap and crashed at a decent time this evening, but he was really fussy all evening, much worse than usual, and we felt that he was acting tired.  The doctor confirmed yesterday that it is much too early to consider giving up on naps, that sleep is extremely important at this age.  So we’ll keep plugging away, even though he won’t nap at least a couple times a week.

A few weeks ago I started keeping track of his missed naps looking for trends.  He hasn’t napped five times since I started tracking it.  Three were on weekends, and initially I thought that perhaps it was a weekend thing, when the days are less structured, we are probably making more noise around the house during nap time since Danielle and I may be talking, or we’re more likely to have someone over.  But he has also missed a couple on weekdays recently so I think that theory doesn’t address it all.

The struggle with napping is similar to the struggle I had with meal times a couple months ago.  When I first left work, meal times were a nightmare.  He did not want to sit in his chair and he when he did he often wouldn’t eat much.  He snacked a lot and ate a lot at times, enough that we weren’t worried about him starving.  But it was a real pain.  Within a couple weeks I had him turned around completely and now meals are usually a lot of fun.  I scaled back on the snacks, got him engaged in making the food, and allowed him to bring toys to the table.  After a little while of that we restricted him to one toy or book at the table, and he often doesn’t have any.  It has worked great, and I keep hoping that I will stumble upon a couple small but critical pieces to the puzzle that will solve the sleeping issue like I did with the meals.

More than one person has told me that the terrible twos are for real, but that they generally start at around one and a half, and last until maybe four years old – basically the span in which they can understand a lot and start to assert themselves but aren’t yet old enough to reason.  Joseph has been so easy-going that I thought that we might breeze through the terrible twos.  Then last week he started to throw more fits and get more stubborn more often.  This was, ironically, the week that started two days after his second birthday.

I still think he is less fussy than most kids his age - his outbursts are often minor and there might be only one or two a day.  And they pretty much only happen when I am trying to get him to do something he doesn’t want to do:  stay out of the street, put away a toy, wash his hair.  For a few days in a row last week he had a couple more outbursts than usual, and I thought it was a harbinger of the terrible twos.  Then it subsided, and we had several days of great behavior.  This evening was particularly rough, but we never know if he is being bothered by a molar coming in, something he ate, hungry, tired, or what.

The flip side on any challenges like these is that he is developing in leaps and bounds.  His comprehension is exploding and that makes it so fun for me introducing new things to him.  He is climbing and getting into new things at the playground, almost speaking in sentences at times, counting, showing a great interest in potty training, singing, doing puzzles…

Maybe he’s just going through a growth spurt or had a couple isolated fussy days.  The one certainty is that if we do have a breakthrough of some sort in his development, it will be right when the baby comes and that will throw everything upside down again.

check up

April 28, 2008 · 1 Comment

We had a nice weekend that included seeing Caroline twice, babysitting offers from Libby on Saturday and Monique on Sunday that we accepted, dinner out one night and neighbors over the next, and we also managed to watch two movies.  Joseph took some time warming up to some of the new faces but was generally good-natured.

Last night Joseph was unusually particular about what he wore to bed – he wanted to wear socks even though he was wearing pajamas that covered his feet, then he wanted his pajamas off, then he wanted them back on.  We finally got him dressed and in bed and heard him playing and talking to himself for quite a while before he finally conked out.  I went in to check on him a little before midnight when I was going to bed, and found him sound asleep and completely naked.  It was very cute but kind of startling.  When we change his diaper in the mornings it is usually pretty heavy, so I knew I had to get a diaper on him and that it would wake him up because he is a pretty light sleeper.  To my surprise I managed to get the diaper back on him, and his pajamas mostly on, without him waking and I snuck back out of the room.  When Danielle went in in the morning the pajamas were back off, but thankfully the diaper was still on.

Today was Joseph’s two year check up.  He started off in good spirits, but he freaked out when the nurse took his blood pressure and it took me a long time to settle him down.  He had another mini-meltdown when the doctor was poking at him, and had just calmed down again when the nurse came in two give him his shots.  The good news is he is healthy, 50th percentile for weight and 75th for height, and we don’t have to go back for another year.  (Of course we’ll probably be back there in a week with the baby…)

Fort C.F. Smith Park

April 24, 2008 · 2 Comments

Our play date today with Cameron and Renee took us to Fort C.F. Smith Park, a very nice park just off of Spout Run.  It was a fort during the civil war and now is owned and run by Arlington County.

There is a very nice trail that winds through the grounds, and the whole loop is about half a mile.  At least half of it is gravel and fairly secluded through woods, while the rest goes through nice gardens and a house that is used for functions and weddings.

It took quite a bit or coercing but I got Joseph to walk the whole trail by himself, either holding my hand or walking along near me.

Afterwards we stopped by a playground near our house before coming home for lunch.

Update:  In response to Danielle’s comment, I’m not crazy about the backwards baseball hat either.  He just got that hat from his grandmother for his birthday and really likes wearing it.  But he likes to put it on himself, and sometimes he puts it on backwards and won’t let me help him.  I have to wait until he is distracted with something else to intervene.

Washington Monument and World War II Memorial

April 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

Most days we’re usually home for good by lunch time, but today after music class we met up with Malcolm and went downtown to see the Washington Monument and the World War II Memorial.

I have been wanting to go to the Washington Monument for a while, mainly because it looks like the views would be great from inside of it.  Also it is one of the few monuments I haven’t been to yet with Joseph, and you can see it from every other one.  I read on the website that there are no strollers allowed, so I thought I’d have to go with another adult to drop Joseph off and then go park the car.  Malcolm was gracious enough to help out, but that part of the trip turned out to be a bust.  You can only go up the Monument with a ticket, which can only be obtained by getting in line at 7am, or reserving one on the website.  The tickets via the web are sold out for over a month.

wwii memorialAll that aside, it was nice to walk around the outside of it.  From a distance it looks like a toothpick sticking out of the ground, but up close it is much larger than I’d realized.  You can also really see the change in coloring of the marble about one third of the way up, where it sat unfinished for about 30 years due to both lack of funds and the Civil War.  I also didn’t realize that it was briefly the tallest building in the world, until the Eiffel Tower was completed shortly after the Monument was.

Joseph had lunch on the road and was much more interested in his jelly sandwich than he was in the Washington Monument.  Afterwards we walked to the World War II Memorial, at which point his interest was piqued by all the fountains, birds, dogs, and people.  I think it is a nice memorial but not nearly as interesting or impressive as some of the others.  It was a great day to be outside though, and Joseph definitely knows who Malcolm is now and said his name repeatedly after he left.

instructions

April 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

Danielle thought it would be a good idea to write down a timeline of Joseph’s whole day for whomever ends up watching him when we go to the hospital.  I’ve already written a lot on this blog about his routine, but it does make sense to gather it in one place and add instructions for his caregiver.

Today I put the infant car seat in the Camry and parked it on the street so that it won’t be blocked in by the other cars that we use more regularly.  So the car that has almost 200,000 miles on it will be the chariot that delivers Danielle to the hospital when she is in labor, and it better not break down.  I’ve gotten to the point where I sometimes wonder when the phone rings if it might be the call, even though it likely won’t come for a couple weeks still.  So at least the car is ready, even if we’re not.

Here is the short version of his routine:
7am  awake
8:30am  breakfast
10am activity
12:30pm lunch
1pm activity
3pm nap
6:45pm dinner
7:30pm bath
8pm books, bed

The long version is after the jump.

rainy day

April 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

We dropped Joseph at Renee’s this morning so that I could join Danielle for today’s checkup.  I assumed Joseph would be fine since he is so comfortable there, but he apparently had a minor meltdown after about an hour when he looked up and realized we weren’t there.  By the time we showed up he was running around and good-natured.

It was fun to see the baby in the ultrasound this morning - she looked all squished up and uncomfortable and I’d be more concerned but the images look exactly what I recall Joseph looking like.

We had another rainy day which meant goofing around in the living room for a little longer than usual.  Joseph has taken to burying himself behind the couch cushions with his cars and trains and playing with them back there.

Joseph naps really well on rainy days.  He conked out easily this afternoon, and I don’t know if it was because of the lazy day or because of my modified routine.  For the last couple days I have pushed nap time back a little and read him books in his room after exercising to settle him down a bit more.  So far it has worked really well.

milestones

April 20, 2008 · 3 Comments

The days go slow but the years go fast.

When I was working it was the exact opposite:  12-hour days would fly by, but it seemed to take forever for the major milestones on my calendar to arrive.  Now the feeling is reversed.  It doesn’t seem like it has been three months since I left work, or two months since I took over the daycare duties.  And it’s hard to believe that Joseph’s second birthday arrived so fast, and we’re on the verge of having another baby.

While these two years have flown by, the days are slow and that is why I have been saying that my life feels like a vacation since leaving work.  Though we do have some regular activities planned, for the most part it is a new adventure each day and we pack a lot in.  Especially now with the nice weather and longer days we are getting out a lot, but we also have a lot of down time in the house for meals, stories, or just horsing around.

Last night I dug up some video I shot at Joseph’s first birthday.  At the time I had intended to put together a little movie of him opening all his presents, to show to our friends and relatives who had mailed things to him.  I never got around to editing anything together, but the raw video is really fun to watch.  He has changed radically in the last year:  walking and talking and looking so much more like a little boy now than like a baby.

We celebrated his second birthday today by having some friends over:  Eric, whose birthday is also today; Renee, whose birthday is Monday; a gaggle of Blomquists and Stetzers, and a few other close friends.  Eric, Renee, and Joseph combined are 75 years old so that’s what Danielle put on the cake.  We had a nice brunch, opened lots of presents, got Joseph to say “Two!” whenever we asked him how old he was, shoveled ice cream cake into him, played with balloons, skipped the nap, took him to a playground, took lots of pictures, and sent him to bed babbling “cake, balloon, playground….”

Danielle is in quite a bit of discomfort this evening and though the due date is just under four weeks away, I’m feeling like it could be any day now.  It was a full day, and tomorrow looks like rain so I plan to finally prep a little for the baby – finding the infant car seat and setting aside some things for the hospital.

JoJo and LaLa

April 18, 2008 · 1 Comment

I got to babysit for Julia for an hour today, and though I’ve seen a lot more of her in the last month it was my first time alone with her and a good opportunity to see what might be in store for us in a couple years.  She’s very smart and articulate and I can reason with her much more than with Joseph.  But there are still challenges.

Joseph really likes playing with her and it is fun to see them together.  A couple weeks ago at Bon Air park she took his hand and was running him all around the playground.  Last week they jumped into this little airplane together to log some flight hours.  I didn’t get any pictures today, but here is one from last week at the playground near Long Branch Nature Center:  JoJo and LaLa, Co-Pilots Through Early Childhood.

(“JoJo” and “LaLa” is what Cameron calls them.)

story time

Didn’t have time to write a blog post today, but while I was cooking dinner I could hear Danielle and Joseph reading books on the living room couch and it sounded really cute so I stepped around the corner and snapped this picture.
